This is a personal project that I spent quite a bit of time on. I started it in 2011 after graduating college. Having an affinity for locomotives helped push the project forward, but I lost interest after a while and repeatedly picked it up and dropped it again from 2011 to 2014. In late 2015, I committed myself to finishing it up to commemorate the release of Quixel SUITE 2. I broadcast a lot of NDO live streams on the Quixel Twitch channel and quite a few DDO texturing events on the Quixel Hangout until I finished it up in late May, 2016.
This project uses three UV sets. The main body is 8k, the wheel assemblies are 4k, and the windows are 2k. It runs at 139,000 polygons overall and was built for an open-world environment in Unreal 4 that’s currently being built in a collaboration with Billy Lundevall, a co-worker of mine at Quixel and all-around fantastic artist and good friend.
Update (July 15th, 2016) – I was asked to write an article about my process for SketchFab. Here it is!
